So what makes African black soap so special? Read on to learn more.
What is eczema?
Let’s start by defining eczema.
Eczema is the umbrella term that refers to a group of skin conditions causing irritation and inflammation.
The most common condition belonging to this group is atopic dermatitis or atopic eczema. Most often, those with atopic dermatitis go on to develop asthma, hay fever, and other allergic issues.
In the US, eczema afflicts 3% of adults and older children, and 10-20% of infants. While the majority of infants outgrow it, some do carry the condition through adulthood.
The signs and symptoms of eczema include dry, itchy, or scaly skin. Depending on the severity, the affected skin may crack, bleed, or become infected.
The disease can be controlled, but it takes compliance and consistency to make it work.
What is African black soap?
Coming from West Africa, it also goes by the name black soap.
Local African plants, such as plantain skins, Shea tree bark, cocoa pods, and palm leaves—are sun-dried and burned. The resulting ash is what gives the black soap its distinct dark color.
Water, Shea butter, oils, and fats are then mixed into the ash. It is cooked by hand for not less than 24 hours. When the mixture solidifies, it is molded and prepared to cure as African black soap.
What is black soap effective against?
Since black soap contains coconut oil, it is high in medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs)—a ‘friendly’ kind of fat. It helps relieves itchiness and dryness associated with eczema.
But other than coconut oil, let’s not forget that black soap also contains Shea butter, cocoa, and palm—so there’s a lot more to it than managing eczema:
- Skin aging
- Melasma or skin discolorations
- Keratosis pilaris or chicken skin
Like any soap, black soap also cleanses the skin, but it’s not your regular cleanser. You can make it your deep-cleanser, as it cleanses deep into the pores. This means it can be an effective substitute for chemical-loaded makeup removers!
Not only that—there’s evidence that black soap contains anti-microbial properties against skin bacteria like Staphylococcus aureus and Candida albicans. Makes sense—after all, coconut oil is a fantastic antibacterial agent itself.
